An electronic device used to stimulate the heart and regulate the heart rhythm. Many children are attached to a pacemaker temporarily after heart surgery, in case their heart rhythm becomes abnormal. Some children need a permanent artificial pacemaker (often because of heart block), in which case the pacemaker is put in, under the skin in the upper abdomen or in front of an armpit, at an operation.
