Patients with an ICD or pacemaker may not be able to have an MRI scan due to the strong magnetic fields used. However, there are ICD and pacemaker devices that are designed to be MRI compatible and additionally, manufacturers are retrospectively checking older models and approving them.
More information and some excellent resources can be found at the MRI My Pacemaker website which is a UK based organisation with a vision to ensure that patients with cardiac devices have the same access to the MRI scanning as everyone else.
Patient device advocate Doug Rachac explains in his excellent video how MRI’s and implanted devices interact and answers many common questions.
